Stockton Ties School Record with 12th Win

Dower, DE – Stockton University (12-4) tied the school record of 12 wins in a season with a 3-1 victory over Wesley (7-10). The win was the fifth straight for the Ospreys and equaled the mark set by the 2013 squad that went 12-8. Victoria Caiazzo (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) led the offense with a goal and an assist.

After two early penalty corners by Stockton, Wesley got on the board first, capitalizing on a corner to take a 1-0 lead on Jessica Behornar's goal just 8:34 into the game. The Ospreys got the equalizer 12 minutes later. Casey Cordonna (Barrington/Haddon Hts.) potted her fifth marker of the season and Caiazzo assisted on the tally.

The 1-1 deadlock lasted until the final 12 minutes, when Stockton scored twice. Kassidy Wentzell (Hammonton/St. Joseph's) stole the ball from a Wesley player and fed Jennelle Long (Matawan/Matawan), who swept the pass into the cage for the go-ahead goal. The counter came at the 58-minute mark and was Long's fifth of the year.

Stockton added an insurance goal on a penalty corner 4:32 later. Britney Stein (Ocean City/Ocean City) fired a pass in front from the right wing and Caiazzo made a nifty deflection to increase the lead to 3-1 with her team-leading seventh marker of the season. The Ospreys allowed just one shot and one corner the rest of the way to seal their 12th victory.

Goalkeeper Emily Gilligan (West Deptford/West Deptford) earned the win with six saves. Stockton outshot Wesley 16-9 and held a 13-7 advantage in penalty corners. The game was delayed due to a power outage in the early going.

Stockton, which has already qualified for the NJAC Tournament, will finish the regular season with a conference game at The College of New Jersey on Saturday at 7 pm. TCNJ is ranked fifth in the nation by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.
