Stockton Drops NJAC Opener to TCNJ 82-54

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (1-3, 0-1 NJAC) fell behind early and could not recover, as they were downed by The College of New Jersey (1-1, 1-0 NJAC) by an 82-54 final on Tuesday night.  Freshman Emily Donzanti (Toms River/Toms River South) led the Ospreys with 16 points and a game-high eight assists on the evening.

It was the league opener for both squads. TCNJ was chosen as the favorite to win the NJAC by a poll of the league coaches before the season.

TCNJ started quickly, hitting their first three three-point attempts and racing out to a 20-8 lead after one period. Donzanti scored six of Stockton's eight points in the frame. The Lions stretched the margin to 37-18 with 3:57 before the half, when the Ospreys mounted a charge.

A 13-3 run to end the period closed the gap to 40-31 at the break. Donzanti led the run with six markers, with Natalie Miller (New Milford/New Milford) banging in a three ball. Baskets by Colleen Brady (Manahawkin/Southern Regions) and Mckenna Forry (Waterford/Hammonton) accounted for the rest of the scoring in the spurt.

A basket by Kirsten Flournoy (Sewell/Timber Creek) and an April Peterson (Lafayette/High Point) foul shot began the third quarter to slice the lead to 40-34, but that was as close as the Ospreys would come. The visitors answered with an 8-0 spurt to push the margin back to double digits at 48-34 and the Lions added on from there. TCNJ outscored Stockton 25-14 in the fourth period to set the final score at 82-54.

Miller backed up Donzanti with 11 points, including 3-5 from behind the arc, while Peterson notched her second double-double in the last three games. The senior tallied 10 points and had game-highs of 12 rebounds and three blocks. Brady tied for game-high honors with three steals.

The Lions were led by Jen Byrne with 24 points and 10 boards, with teammate Shannon Devitt also notching a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds, and pilfered three steals.

Stockton will have a week off before their next game. The Ospreys will face Rutgers-Camden at home next Wednesday November 30. The game is scheduled for an 8 pm tip-off.
