Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (3-1, 2-0 NJAC) pulled away down the stretch for an 80-68 victory over a pesky Rutgers-Camden (0-6, 0-2) squad that was seeking its first win of the season. Five Ospreys scored in double figures in a balanced effort.
Jordan Taylor (East Orange/Cicely Tyson) went 3-5 from three-point range and scored a team-high 15 points followed by
Steve Ferebee (Galloway/Absegami) with 14 markers and a game-high 10 rebounds for a double-double.
Freshman
Travis Holland (Toms River/TR North) went 5-8 from the floor and hit double digits for the first time in his young career with 11 points.
Brandon Hamilton (Camden/Paulsboro) and
Tariq Baker (Brooklyn, NY/St. Anthony's) chipped in with 10 points apiece.
Back-to-back layups by Hamilton capped a great start by the Ospreys as they raced out to an 11-1 lead. The momentum stalled and Stockton trailed by one twice late in the half before settling for a 42-41 edge at intermission. Taylor topped the Ospreys with 10 first-half points but the Scarlet Raptors stayed close by shooting a torrid 9-13 (69.2%) from three-point range.
In the second half, Rutgers-Camden briefly pulled ahead 48-47 before
Tahir McCrea (Jersey City/Lincoln) scored five of his seven points during an 8-0 run that put Stockton ahead 55-48. The Scarlet Raptors answered with a 9-1 spurt to edge in front 57-56 with 11:48 on the clock.
The Ospreys then took control of the game by scoring 14 unanswered points for their biggest lead of the game at 70-57 with 6:55 to go. Six different players scored during the onslaught, with Hamilton and
Keenan Williams Jr. (Paulsboro/Paulsboro) draining three-pointers. Stockton led by at least eight the rest of way as Taylor scored five points down the stretch to seal the 80-68 victory.
Tyrell Russell led five Rutgers-Camden players in double figures with 16 points. Trai Greer stuffed the boxscore with 13 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the Scarlet Raptors.
