Stockton Edged 71-69 in Consolation Game

Ashland, VA – Stockton University (6-6) was edged 71-69 by Carroll University (WI) (5-8) in the consolation game of the Randolph-Macon Coaches Tournament. Jordan Taylor (East Orange/Cicely Tyson) hit five three-pointers and led four Ospreys in double figures with 19 points.

Keenan Williams Jr. (Paulsboro/Paulsboro) went 5-7 from the floor and finished with 12 points. Williams Jr. later was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Tariq Baker (Brooklyn, NY/St. Anthony's) and Brandon Hamilton (Camden/Paulsboro) contributed 10 points apiece. Stockton again faced a team that shot well from three-point range as Carroll was 13-24 (54.2%) from beyond the arc.

The Ospreys trailed 23-13 midway through the first half but outscored the Pioneers 20-6 the rest of the period. Taylor led the charge with four three-pointers for 12 points while Baker added four points and an assist. The run gave Stockton a 33-29 lead at the half.

The Ospreys started strong in the second half and extended the advantage to nine 48-39 on a dunk by Steve Ferebee (Galloway/Absegami). The game tightened considerably down the stretch, with a margin of more than five for just 11 seconds over the last 11 minutes. Stockton managed to stay in front for most of that time and led 62-59 with 3:31 to play.

Carroll surged ahead with eight straight points and the Ospreys faced a 67-62 deficit at the 1:44 mark. Stockton trailed 71-64 with 40 seconds left but sprang back within two on a three-pointer by Hamilton with 29 ticks left followed by a Carroll turnover and basket by Williams Jr. nine seconds later.

Now trailing just 71-69, the Ospreys forced another turnover but a potential game-tying jumper in the closing seconds was off the mark, resulting in a two-point defeat for Stockton.

Stockton returns home to host 23rd-ranked Swarthmore on January 2 at 7 pm.
