Union, NJ – Stockton University (16-8, 12-5 NJAC) pulled away in the fourth quarter and downed Kean University (9-14, 6-11) 71-59 in the next-to-last game of the regular season. The victory was the third straight and ninth in the last 10 games for the Ospreys, who shot 58.8 percent from the floor (10-17) in the final period.
Sasha Williams (Cherry Hill/CH West) did a little bit of everything, finishing with a game-high 21 points plus eight rebounds, five assists, five steals and three blocks.
Najha Treadwell (Cinnaminson/Cinnaminson) produced another monster game as she tallied 20 points and a game-high 19 rebounds for her sixth consecutive double-double.
Sammi Dabbundo (Philadelphia, PA/Bishop Eustace) went 3-5 from three-point range and scored 11 points.
Lea Mendolla (Nutley/Mount St. Dominic) also tossed in 11 markers while playing all 40 minutes for the Ospreys. Stockton dominated inside, with a 54-26 advantage on points in the paint and 20 second-chance points.
The first quarter was close, with Stockton falling behind by four twice before coming back to forge a 13-13 tie at the end of the period. Kean opened up a 25-18 lead in the second stanza before the Ospreys again closed strong. Williams scored six points during a 13-2 run that Dabbundo capped with a three-pointer that gave Stockton a 31-27 edge at the break.
The Ospreys stretched the lead to eight points twice in the third quarter, with the second coming at 48-40 after a three-point play by Treadwell. Kean reeled off six markers in a row to make it 48-46 before a layup by Williams gave Stockton a 50-46 lead after three.
Kean made it a one-possession game three times in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter before Stockton put the game away. Williams and Treadwell scored six points apiece while Dabbundo added the other two as the Ospreys closed the game with a 14-5 run over the last 5:36 to pull away and win 71-59.
Stockton will end the regular season by hosting New Jersey City on Wednesday at 6 pm. With a win, the Ospreys will clinch the No. 3 seed for the NJAC tournament, which begins next Saturday, February 17.
