Auburndale, FL – Stockton University (1-3) jumped out to a big lead but could not hold off Springfield College (3-2-1) and fell 13-11 in a roller coaster of a game that featured a combined 24 runs, 28 hits and six errors.
David Mann (Waldwick/Waldwick) and freshman
John Perrino (Wall/Wall) led the Ospreys with three hits, two runs and two RBI apiece.
Stockton got off to a great start with five runs in the top of the first.
Nick D'Arcy (Toms River/TR East) singled in two runs while
Joe Cashman (Bordentown/Bordentown) and
Anthony Napoli (Erial/Timber Creek) added RBI singles. The Ospreys plated two runs on one hit, an error and a passed ball in the second frame to up the lead to 7-0.
A bases-loaded walk to Perrino in the third inning made it 8-0 in Stockton's favor before Springfield cut the lead in half with four runs in the bottom of the third. The Ospreys came right back with a single run in the top of the fourth as Mann led off with a single and later scored on a passed ball for a 9-4 advantage.
Springfield came all the way back to forge a 9-9 tie by scoring five runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth. After 18 runs in the first four innings, the offense suddenly ground to a halt as neither team got on the board in the next three-and-a-half frames. The Pride then surged ahead with four runs in the bottom of the eighth that made the score 13-9.
Down to its last chance, Stockton tried to rally in the top of the ninth. Mann and D'Arcy stroked RBI singles with one out to pull the Ospreys within 13-11 and put the tying run aboard. A 6-4-3 double play then halted the comeback try, leaving Stockton with a frustrating two-run setback.
Stockton's next game in the Sunshine State will be tomorrow evening when the Ospreys take on Suffolk University at 6:45 pm.
