Minneola, FL- Stockton University (5-1) kept their potent offense going with a pair of wins on their second day in Florida. The Ospreys won a thrilling 10-9 victory over Franklin & Marshall (PA) in the opener. They downed Smith College (MA) in the second game by a 15-9 score, extending their win streak to four straight games.The Ospreys scored 25 runs and pounded out 29 hits on the day.
Alexa Massa (Moorestown/Moorestown) rapped career hit number 100 in the opener against F & M.
Stockton exploded for six runs in the first inning against the Diplomats, but the visitors answered with seven runs over the next two innings to take a 7-6 lead after three frames. The Diplomats plated two more runs in the top of the sixth inning before Stockton mounted their comeback.
Carli Shaw (Bordentown/Bordentown) and
Meg Murzello (Maple Shade/Holy Cross) opened the bottom of the frame with singles.
Alexandra Cosenzo (East Hanover/Hanover Park) then knotted the contest with a long homer to right field, her second in as many days, for a 9-9 deadlock.
The Ospreys took the game the very next inning on consecutive walks to Shaw, Murzello and Cosenzo, setting the stage for Massa. Her line drive glanced off the pitcher, allowing Shaw to score with the game-winning tally for the 10-9 win.
Marissa Semeraro (Ridgefield/Ridgefield) earned her second win with 4.1 innings of relief, striking out two hitters.
The second game saw Stockton blow out to a 12-0 lead after 3½ innings. Freshman
Samantha Huetter (Roseland/West Essex) was cruising in the circle, not having allowed a hit until the fateful fourth frame. Smith exploded for six markers to cut the lead in half at 12-6. They added three more runs in the bottom of the to slice the margin to 12-9 but that was as close as they would come.
Stockton piled on three more scores to set the final score at 15-9 in favor of the Ospreys. Huetter won her first career game, tossing 4.0 innings with four hits and four earned runs.
Hannah Bibeault (Hopatcong/Hopatcong) closed out the game by pitching the final three innings.
Danielle Lugo (Vineland/Vineland),
Chelsea Thomas (Barrington/Haddon Heights) and
Casey Schieda (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) had two hits each. Shaw, Thomas and
Ashley Lobell (Cedar Knolls/Whippany Park) scored three times each and Stockton pilfered seven bases in the game.
Stockton will continue their trip with two more games tomorrow. The Ospreys will face RPI (NY) at 4:30 pm, and then face off against Suffolk University (MA) at 7pm. Both games will be played at Hancock Park in Clermont, Florida.
