Clermont, FL – Stockton University (5-2) split its third set of games in Florida. The Ospreys were edged 3-2 by RPI (5-2) to end a four-game winning streak, but they bounced back with an 8-1 win over Suffolk University (3-3).
Casey Schieda (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) and
Carli Shaw (Bordentown/Bordentown) led Stockton with two hits apiece in each game.
Schieda and Shaw both went 2-3 to account for half of Stockton's eight hits against RPI.
Alexandra Cosenzo (East Hanover/Hanover Park) hit a home run for the third straight day. Her homer came in the top of the first to give the Ospreys an early 1-0 lead.
RPI jumped ahead with three runs on three hits and a Stockton error in the bottom of the third. Two of the runs were unearned, coming after the error with two outs extended the inning. Stockton got within 3-2 in the sixth frame as
Meg Murzello (Maple Shade/Holy Cross) led off with a single, stole second and scored on a two-out RBI single by
Ashley Lobell (Cedar Knolls/Whippany Park).
Shaw singled with two outs in the seventh to put the tying run aboard, but she was stranded. Freshman pitcher
Marissa Semeraro (Ridgefield/Ridgefield) continued her consistent work. Semeraro allowed just one earned run (two unearned) on five hits and set an early career high with five strikeouts but was saddled with the loss.
Shaw and Schieda were two of five players who each tallied two hits in the 8-1 win over Suffolk. Cosenzo, Murzello and
Alexa Massa (Moorestown/Moorestown) also rapped two safeties apiece, with Cosenzo adding two RBI and Massa scoring twice. Overall, Stockton registered 13 hits in the victory.
In the first inning, Cosenzo doubled home Murzello and scored on a fielder's choice for a quick 2-0 lead. Schieda doubled in Massa in the fourth frame and
Megan Katzmar (Cinnaminson/Holy Cross) delivered a pinch-hit RBI single to score Lobell and make it 4-0. Suffolk scored its only run on two hits in the top of the fifth.
Stockton pulled away with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Cosenzo brought home the first run with an RBI single that plated Shaw, and Massa followed with an RBI double. Massa later scored an unearned run on a Suffolk error to increase the advantage to 7-1.
Daniela Marinaro (Cedar Grove/Cedar Grove) led off Stockton's half of the sixth with a single and eventually scored the last run of the game on a wild pitch to seal the 8-1 victory for the Ospreys. Stockton pitcher
Hannah Bibeault (Hopatcong/Hopatcong) improved to 3-0 on the season. Bibeault scattered seven hits and struck out six in a complete game on the mound.
Stockton will have a day off tomorrow and then return to the diamond on Thursday for games against UMass Dartmouth at 2 pm and Concordia (WI) at 4:30 pm.
