Winter Haven, FL – Stockton University (2-6) played its third game in just over 18 hours and absorbed a 7-3 defeat to Becker College (4-7) in a fast-moving game that was played in a crisp 1:52.
Garrhet Reedy (Tinton Falls/Monmouth) extended his hitting streak to five by going 2-4.
John Perrino (Wall/Wall) also went 2-4 at the plate.
Stockton pitcher
Rico Viani (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) did not allow a hit through the first five innings but the Ospreys managed just two safeties through six frames. In the bottom of the sixth, a Stockton error with two outs opened the door for three unearned runs and a 3-0 deficit. Becker later tacked on four more tallies on five hits in the eighth frame for a 7-0 count.
In the top of the ninth, Stockton finally got on the board on an RBI double by
Garrett DeMarrais (Oradell/River Dell) that scored
Zach Gustites (Flemington/Hunterdon). DeMarrais and Reedy then both scored on a Becker error to make it 7-3, but the deficit was too much to overcome and the game ended on a double play.
Viani struck out seven in six innings on the mound. The sophomore gave up just two hits and all three runs against him were unearned.
Stockton will wrap up its week in Florida by playing its ninth game in eight days tomorrow morning when the Ospreys take on Western New England at 9 am.
