Stockton Wears Down Against Western New England

Winter Haven, FL – Stockton University (2-7) concluded its nine-game, eight-day trip to Florida with a 22-7 setback at the hands of Western New England (3-2). The contest was the fourth for the Ospreys in a little under 46 hours. Mike DeSenzo (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) went 3-5 with two hits and two RBI for his fourth multi-hit game of the early season.

Garrhet Reedy (Tinton Falls/Monmouth) was 1-2 with three RBI to extend his current hitting streak to six games. Zach Gustites (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) contributed a double and a run for the Ospreys.

Stockton fell behind 4-0 in the top of the first and trailed 5-0 before getting on the board with a two-run single by Reedy in the bottom of the third to close within 5-2. In the fifth frame, DeSenzo singled and Gustites doubled, setting the stage for an RBI single by John Perrino (Wall/Wall) and sacrifice fly RBI from Reedy that made it 5-4.

The game slipped away from the Ospreys in the last three innings as Western New England scored two runs in the seventh inning, six in the eighth and nine in the ninth. Stockton's last three runs came in the bottom of the eighth on a bases-loaded walk to Jeff Schick (Marlton/Cherokee) and a two-run single by DeSenzo.

Stockton used seven pitchers in the game. Freshman Zach Fillmore (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) had an effective 4.1-inning stint out of the bullpen, allowing one run on five hits with five strikeouts to give his team a chance to get back in the game early.

Stockton's next game is scheduled for Tuesday at home against Immaculata at 3:30 pm.
