Stockton Splits Doubleheader with Lesley

Auburndale, FL – Stockton University (2-5) returned to action after a day off by splitting a doubleheader with Lesley University on Thursday. The Ospreys dropped the opener 10-1 but won the nightcap 5-2 behind the dominant pitching of Ray Hughes (Forked River/Lacey Twp.) who struck out a career-high 12 batters in a complete game.

Mike DeSenzo (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) went 2-4 for a pair of Stockton's seven hits in the first game. Garrhet Reedy (Tinton Falls/Monmouth) went 1-2 and scored the lone run for the Ospreys during a double play in the second inning. Lesley plated six runs in the top of the second and two apiece in the fifth and seventh frames for the 10-1 final.

Hughes twirled a gem for Stockton in the nightcap. The junior did not allow an earned run (two unearned) and held Lesley to just two hits and one walk while establishing a new career best with 12 strikeouts. Hughes fanned five of the first six batters that he faced and whiffed at least one in all seven innings.

Offensively, the Ospreys pounded out 13 hits. DeSenzo went 2-4 with a triple, run and an RBI while Joe Cashman (Bordentown/Bordentown) was 2-3 with two RBI and a stolen base. Reedy, Zach Gustites (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) and John Perrino (Wall/Wall) contributed two hits apiece.

Cashman stroked RBI singles in the first and third innings to help the Ospreys to a 3-0 lead. After Lesley scored an unearned run in the bottom of the third, DeSenzo ripped an RBI triple in the fourth frame and then scored on an RBI single by Reedy to make it a 5-1 advantage. Lesley added another unearned run in the fifth before Hughes slammed the door by retiring seven of the next eight batters to seal the 5-2 win.

After finishing the doubleheader on Thursday evening, the Ospreys had a quick turnaround before a single game against Becker College on Friday morning at 9 am.
