Clermont, FL – Stockton University (7-5) finished its 10-game trip to Florida on a sour note, dropping its last two games in the Sunshine State by 5-2 scores to Transylvania (10-3) and Millikin (9-5). The Ospreys slumped offensively, managing only 10 hits in 18 innings on the day, with three coming off the bat of
Morgan DiVello (Atco/Hammonton).
Chelsea Thomas (Barrington/Haddon Hts.) went 1-2 with a walk, two runs and two stolen bases against Transylvania, which was ranked 14th in the NFCA preseason national poll. Thomas has stolen 58 consecutive bases without being thrown out, the fifth-longest streak in NCAA Division III history.
Stockton fell behind 2-0 on single runs by Transylvania in each of the first two innings. The Ospreys got one back in the third frame as Thomas singled, stole second, moved to third on a bunt single by
Carli Shaw (Bordentown/Bordentown) and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Alexa Massa (Moorestown/Moorestown).
Transylvania answered right away with three runs on four hits in the top of the fourth to increase Stockton's deficit to 5-1. Thomas again produced a run in the fifth inning, leading off with a walk and stealing second before eventually scoring on an RBI single by
Alexandra Cosenzo (East Hanover/Hanover Park) to make it 5-2. The Ospreys did not threaten in the last two innings and fell by three.
Against Millikin, DiVello went 2-3 to account for half of Stockton's four hits in the game. The Ospreys took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Shaw led off the game with a walk and scored on an RBI single by Cosenzo two batters later. Cosenzo hit safely in every game of the team's Florida trip for a 10-game hitting streak.
Shaw led off the third inning with a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a groundout by Cosenzo that produced her second RBI of the game and a 2-0 advantage. Singles by DiVello in the fourth and seventh innings were the only two hits by the Ospreys the rest of the way.
Millikin surged ahead with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth and added one more, an unearned tally, in the sixth frame for a 5-2 count. In Stockton's last chance, a single by DiVello and a Millikin error brought the tying run to the plate with one out, but the Ospreys were foiled on a groundout and a strikeout.
After playing 10 games in six days, Stockton will get a much-needed break of eight days before playing a doubleheader at Stevens on March 24 at 1 pm.
