Game Recap: Softball |

Stockton Sweeps Stevens; 3-0, 7-3

Weehawken, NJ – Stockton University (9-5) broke a three-game losing skid with a sweep of Stevens (2-6) by scores of 3-0 and 7-3 on Sunday afternoon. Megan Katzmar (Cinnaminson/Holy Cross) came off the bench to knock in an RBI in each game as the Ospreys pounded out 19 hits on the day.

Stockton plated single runs in three different innings in game one for the victory. Casey Schieda (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) got things started in game one with her first homer of the season for a 1-0 lead in the second inning.

In the fifth frame, Meg Murzello (Maple Shade/Holy Cross) singled and stole second, setting up an Alexa Massa (Moorestown/Moorestown) squeeze bunt for a 2-0 margin. In the seventh, it was Murzello again singling and pilfering second. Alexandra Cosenzo (East Hanover/Hanover Park) walked and Massa reached on an infield hit to load the bases.

Katzmar, batting for Ashley Lobell (Cedar Knolls/Whippany Park), grounded into a fielder's choice to score Murzello with the final tally of the game. Freshman Marissa Semeraro (Ridgefield/Ridgefield) earned her third win of the season with five innings of shutout pitching in the circle.

She allowed just four hits before being relieved by Victoria Torp (West Milford/West Milford) who nailed down her second save of the season. Torp tossed the final two frames allowing just one hit in preserving the victory.

In the nightcap, the Ospreys plated five runs in the third and fourth innings to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Chelsea Thomas (Barrington/Haddon Heights) singled, stole second and third, before scoring on an error for a 1-0 lead. Stockton plated four runs in the fourth frame on RBI by Katzmar, Lobell and a two-run triple by Carli Shaw (Bordentown/Bordentown).

The Ducks scored a run in their half of the fourth to slice the margin to 5-1 but Stockton responded with a pair of markers in the 6th inning.  Thomas and Shaw both reached on bunt singles, setting up Cosenzo who scored both runners with a two run double for a 7-1 margin.

Stevens plated two more runs in the seventh inning, but time ran out on the 7-3 victory for Stockton. Shaw, Cosenzo and Thomas all rapped two hits with Shaw knocking in three RBI and Cosenzo a pair. Hannah Bibeault (Hopatcong/Hopatcong) picked up her fourth win with four innings of pitching, with freshman Samantha Huetter (Roseland/West Essex) tossing the final three innings for her second save of the year.

Stockton will be back in action on Tuesday when they will travel to Reading, PA to face unbeaten (11-0-1) Alvernia in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3 pm.
