Arlington, VA – Stockton University (5-3) took its first lead with 11:15 to play but was outscored 4-1 in the last 10 minutes of the game, resulting a 9-7 defeat to Marymount (7-3).
Gaby Ojeda (Galloway/Absegami) led the Ospreys with four goals and an assist plus a team-high four draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Michaella Butrico (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) tossed in two goals.
Marymount broke out to a 2-0 lead in the first two minutes before Butrico got Stockton on the board. The teams then went scoreless for over 14 minutes until another marker by the Saints made it a 3-1 count in their favor.
Just 16 seconds later, Ojeda potted her first goal, assisted by
Tamara Torales (Basking Ridge/Ridge), to pull the Ospreys within 3-2.
Melanie Patterson (Jackson/Jackson Liberty) scored the tying goal with 1:55 left in the first half and the teams went to the break knotted 3-3.
Marymount went back on top 4-3 eight-and-a-half minutes into the second half. Stockton later surged ahead with a 3-1 spurt in a span of 2:36. Ojeda tied the match 4-4 but the Saints regained the edge a minute later. Butrico scored with an assist by Ojeda at the 12-minute mark and Ojeda gave the Ospreys their first lead of the game 45 seconds later.
Marymount grabbed the momentum back with three goals in 3:42 for an 8-6 score with 7:06 remaining. Ojeda struck again to bring Stockton's deficit back to one at 8-7 with 6:21 on the clock but the Saints reestablished a two-goal margin with 4:21 to go. The Ospreys fired three shots on goal the rest of the way but all three were stopped by goalkeeper Holly Reik and Stockton fell 9-7.
Freshman
Olivia Paolillo (Freehold/Colts Neck) paced the Osprey defense with three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Butrico registered two caused turnovers and two ground balls to go with her two goals.
Stockton will host St. Joseph's-Long Island on Saturday at 3 pm.
