Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (4-3) won 7-6 over DeSales University (2-5) in dramatic fashion as
Tommy Gallo (Clinton/North Hunterdon) scored the tying goal with 2.1 seconds left and
Eric Ellis (Voorhees/Eastern) netted the game-winner in overtime. Gallo scored five of Stockton's seven goals and assisted on the OT winner.
Stockton took its first lead of the game at 5-4 on a marker by Gallo with 1:20 left in the third quarter. DeSales' Joe Neggia pulled the Bulldogs into a 5-5 tie just under three minutes into the fourth period and then gave the Bulldogs a 6-5 edge with 6:55 to play in regulation.
The teams went back and forth until the final 30 seconds, when Stockton forced a turnover to give them one last chance on offense. The Ospreys drew a crosschecking penalty with 10 ticks left and Gallo fired home a man-up goal with just 2.1 seconds on the clock to tie the game 6-6 and force overtime.
Because the penalty was deemed non-releasable due to its severity, Stockton remained man-up at the start of OT.
Anthony Brigati (Wayne/Wayne Hills) won the opening faceoff, and following a timeout, Gallo fed Ellis for the game-winner 36 seconds into OT that gave the Ospreys the thrilling 7-6 triumph.
Stockton outshot DeSales 35-20 in the game but Bulldogs' goalkeeper Matt Berry made 13 saves and the Ospreys also were hampered by 18 turnovers. Stockton's offensive struggles were offset by stout defense that pressed DeSales into 23 turnovers.
Colin Wharton (Cinnaminson/Camden Catholic) led the defensive effort with three caused turnovers and four ground balls.
Stockton went scoreless for the first 16:31 but only trailed 2-0 before Gallo got the team on the board. DeSales answered with two goals 1:36 apart to put the Ospreys in a 4-1 hole.
Erik Anderson (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) got the comeback started and Gallo followed 54 seconds later to lower the deficit to one at 4-3 at the half.
Neither team scored for the first eleven-and-a-half minutes of the third quarter until Gallo found the net to tie the game at 4-4. Just over two minutes later, Gallo gave Stockton its first lead with 1:20 left in the period, setting the stage for the exciting action that followed.
Stockton goalkeeper
Justin Ruiz (Holmdel/Holmdel) earned the win with four saves, including two crucial stops in the fourth quarter. The Ospreys also survived a shot off the post with 4:50 to go and three more that were off the mark that could have made it a two-goal margin. Brigati had another strong game, winning 12 of 16 faceoffs and snagging seven ground balls.
Neggia and Zach Bowen scored two goals apiece to lead DeSales. Frank Krug added five ground balls and two caused turnovers for the visitors.
After playing six straight home games, Stockton will begin a four-game road trip by playing at Montclair State on Saturday at 1 pm.
