Stockton Doubles Neumann 6-3

Aston, PA – Stockton University (3-9) pounded out 14 hits, including four doubles, and defeated Neumann (8-11) 6-3 in a road game. Mike DeSenzo (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) went 4-5 with a double, two runs and an RBI to lead the offense.

John Perrino (Wall/Wall) ripped two doubles and registered one RBI. Rico Viani (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.), Garrhet Reedy (Tinton Falls/Monmouth) and JJ Swentkowski (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT) also stroked two hits apiece for the Ospreys.

DeSenzo led off the game with a single, stole second and scored on a one-out RBI double by Perrino to give Stockton an early 1-0 lead, but Neumann quickly answered with two unearned runs on two hits and an error in the bottom of the first for a 2-1 count.

Stockton quickly regained the lead in the top of the second. Viani smacked a double and scored on an RBI single by Tyler Hobbs (Brick/Brick Memorial). Hobbs then went to second on an error and third on a wild pitch before scoring on an RBI double by DeSenzo to put the Ospreys back on top at 3-2. Neumann knotted the game 3-3 in the third frame and the teams went scoreless for the next two innings.

Swentkowski led off the sixth with a single and later scored the eventual winning run on an RBI single by Viani with two outs. Reedy and Joe Cashman (Bordentown/Bordentown) each singled in a run in the seventh frame, scoring DeSenzo and Reedy respectively, to complete the scoring in the 6-3 Stockton triumph.

Six Stockton pitchers combined to limit Neumann to seven hits and just one earned run (two unearned). Freshman Zach Fillmore (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) earned his first career win with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Fillmore allowed two hits and fanned one batter.

Tim Rossi (Point Pleasant/Pt. Pleasant Boro) was effective in seventh and eighth frames, inducing two double plays and holding the Knights to one hit and no runs. James Manos (Freehold/Freehold Boro) tossed a scoreless ninth, including one hit and one whiff, for his second save of the season.

Stockton will begin NJAC play with a doubleheader at Montclair State on Saturday, with the first game beginning at 11:30 am.
