Union, NJ – Stockton University (8-5, 1-2 NJAC) held a lead early but was unable to fend off Kean University (11-2, 1-2) and fell to the Cougars 10-8 in an NJAC road game.
Kristen Russo (Wayne/Wayne Hills) and
Tamara Torales (Basking Ridge/Ridge) scored two goals apiece for the Ospreys.
After an early goal by Kean with 1:56 gone, markers by
Michaella Butrico (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) and Russo 41 seconds apart vaulted Stockton ahead 2-1. Kean produced the second of four ties in the game at 2-2 but
Gaby Ojeda (Galloway/Absegami) gave the Ospreys a 3-2 edge.
Kean scored two straight goals to take its first lead at 4-3 and Russo answered with her second of the day to even the match 4-4. The Cougars seized control with three goals in just under three minutes for a 7-4 count.
Danielle Graham (Cherry Hill/CH West) got one back for Stockton with 1:50 left in the first half and they trailed 7-5 at the break.
Kean struck quickly in the second half, making it 8-5 just 36 seconds in.
Melanie Patterson (Jackson/Jackson Liberty) brought the margin back to two at 8-6 but the Ospreys could get no closer. The Cougars sealed the outcome with two straight markers that resulted in Stockton's largest deficit of the game at 10-6. Torales netted two goals in the last 3:12 but the Ospreys fell 10-8.
Jessica Catalioto (Ringwood/Lakeland) produced a strong effort on defense and draws, registering team highs of four draw controls and three caused turnovers plus three ground balls. Stockton goalkeeper
Stevie Ader (Califon/Voorhees) recorded nine saves in the game.
Stockton returns home to host Rutgers-Camden in an NJAC matchup on Tuesday at 4 pm.
