Stockton Knocks Off #1 Rowan 3-2

Glassboro, NJ – Stockton University (4-12, 1-3 NJAC) scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth and edged #1 Rowan University (16-3, 2-2 NJAC) 3-2. The Profs are ranked first in the American Baseball Coaches Association poll. Mike DeSenzo (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) went 3-4 with a double, run and an RBI to lead the Ospreys.

Rico Viani (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) was 2-4 with a double and three Stockton pitchers held Rowan to two runs on six hits one day after the Profs tallied 11 runs and 18 hits against the Ospreys. Freshman Gavin Pabst (Manchester/Manchester Twp.) started the game and yielded two runs on six hits in the first 6.1 innings.

Fellow rookie Zach Fillmore (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) collected the win with 1.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen in which he did not allow a hit. Ray Hughes (Forked River/Lacey Twp.) retired the first two batters in the ninth, issued a walk and then ended the game with a strikeout to earn a save.

Stockton took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. DeSenzo led off the game with a double and later scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Garrhet Reedy (Tinton Falls/Monmouth). Rowan answered with single runs in the second and third frames to pull ahead 2-1.

The Ospreys tied the game in the fifth inning. Tyler Hobbs (Brick/Brick Memorial) singled with one out, moved to second on a single by Viani and scored on an RBI single by John Perrino (Wall/Wall) for a 2-2 deadlock. The game remained scoreless for the next three-and-a-half innings until the top of the ninth.

David Mann (Waldwick/Waldwick) reached on a fielder's choice, then went to second on a walk and third on a wild pitch. After a walk to Hobbs loaded the bases, DeSenzo lofted a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Mann with the eventual winning run in the 3-2 upset.

Stockton's home doubleheader against Kean was originally scheduled for tomorrow but has been pushed back to Sunday at 11:30 am.
