Glassboro, NJ - Stockton University (24-15) scored three runs in the top of the seventh to erase a 2-1 deficit and defeat Rowan University 4-2 in the first round of the NJAC Tournament. Pinch-hitter
Megan Katzmar (Cinnaminson/Holy Cross) stroked a two-run single that plated the tying and go-ahead runs.
Sophomore
Alexandra Cosenzo (East Hanover/Hanover Park) rapped two hits and reached the 100-hit mark for her career.
Meg Murzello (Maple Shade) contributed two hits and an RBI for the Ospreys.
The game was scoreless through the first three innings as Stockton starter
Hannah Bibeault (Hopatcong/Hopatcong) and Rowan's Jesse DiDomenico kept the offenses at bay.
Chelsea Thomas (Barrington/Haddon Hts.) led off the fourth with a triple into the right field corner and scored the game's first run on a groundout by
Casey Schieda (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) for a 1-0 edge.
Rowan pulled ahead 2-1 with single tallies in the fourth and fifth frames. Cosenzo reached the 100-hit milestone with a single in the sixth inning but Stockton stranded runners at second and third. The Ospreys went into the seventh stanza, their last at-bat, trailing 2-1.
Ashley Lobell (Cedar Knolls/Whippany Park) led off with an infield single and moved to second on an error that allowed pinch-hitter
Gracie Meyer (Pittsgrove/A.P. Schalick) to reach base. An infield hit by
Liani Ortiz (Marlton/Cherokee) loaded the bases with nobody out and Katzmar followed with a two-run single that put Stockton on top 3-2.
Murzello then stroked an RBI single that brought Ortiz home to increase the lead to 4-2.
Victoria Torp (West Milford/West Milford), who came out of the bullpen in the bottom of the fifth, tossed a scoreless seventh frame to seal the 4-2 triumph. Torp held Rowan to no runs on one hit with one strikeout in 2.1 innings pitched to earn the win in relief.
The NJAC Tournament moves to Montclair State for the weekend. Stockton next will play Ramapo in a winners' bracket game on Friday at 6 pm.
