Grand Rapids, MI – Stockton University (0-1) fought hard during the first half but eventually dropped a 5-2 decision to Calvin College (1-0) on Friday night.
Eucario Solano (Galloway/Absegami) and freshman
Villy Fortulus (Winslow Twp./Winslow Twp.) scored the goals for Stockton. The Knights are nationally ranked at #7 by the United Soccer Coaches.
The Ospreys wasted no time in scoring the first marker of the game, as Solano scored on a penalty kick for a quick 1-0 margin just 2:27 into the contest. Jacob Witte knotted the game at 1-1 in the ninth minute.
Fortulus tallied his first career goal as an Osprey at 16:13, when he took a pass from
Dan Marino (Turnersville/Washington Twp.) and deposited it for another one goal advantage at 2-1 for Stockton. In the 37th minute Calvin again tied it with a tally for a 2-2 deadlock.
Christian Bik (Vineland/St. Augustine Prep) had a header knocked away, off a corner kick by Solano, as time ran out in the first half and the game remained at the 2-2 score.
It was all Calvin during the final 45 minutes as they potted three goals for a commanding 5-2 lead. The Ospreys would not go quietly though, as Bik and
Jake Treiber (Marlton/Cherokee) each had an attempt kicked away in the 88th and 89th minutes by Knights goalkeeper Chris Morrish to preserve the 5-2 victory for Calvin.
Bik led the team with three shots, including two on net as Stockton was outshot 16-7 by the home team. Sophomore
Dino Gromitsaris (Bordentown/Bordentown) made four saves in net but suffered the loss in his first game at Stockton. Morrish made three saves with Witte tallying two of the goals for Calvin.
Stockton will finish up their brief two-match tour of Michigan, when they will face Hope College in Holland, Michigan tomorrow. Game time is set for 7 pm.
