Union, NJ – Stockton University (1-1) broke into the win column for the first time this season with a 4-0 shutout of Staten Island (0-2) in the Kean University Cougar Classic. Four Ospreys scored one goal apiece led by
Madison Dorney (Washington Twp./Washington Twp.) with a goal and an assist.
Dorney, a transfer from Rowan College at Gloucester County, scored her first points in a Stockton uniform. Sophomore
Alexa Simonetti (Wayne/Wayne Valley) and freshman
Dayna Van Pelt (Manasquan/Manasquan) each netted their first career goal in the victory.
After a scoreless first half, Stockton unleashed a four-goal outburst in the second stanza, beginning with a penalty kick by
Salena LeDonne (Parsippany/Parsippany) just 39 seconds into the period. Dorney dribbled down the field, beat a defender and scored unassisted at 69:46 to double the lead to 2-0.
Only 2:26 after Dorney's goal, Simonetti tapped in a deflected ball to make it 3-0 in favor of the Ospreys. Van Pelt later received a long through ball from Dorney and scored on a breakaway with 8:05 remaining to put the finishing touch on the 4-0 win.
Stockton goalkeeper
Nicole Pallante (Brick/Brick Twp.) made four saves to record her 26th career shutout, one behind
Sarah Hinkle (2010-13) for fourth in Stockton history. Staten Island goalie Kaila DiBenedetto made five saves for the Dolphins.
After starting the season with two games at the Cougar Classic, Stockton will play its home opener at G. Larry James Stadium on Wednesday when the Ospreys host Moravian at 7 pm.
