Union, NJ – Stockton University (4-3, 1-0 NJAC) began conference play with a 1-0 road victory at Kean University (4-2, 0-1 NJAC). Freshman
Villy Fortulus (Winslow Twp./Winslow Twp.) scored the game-winner with just over 20 minutes remaining.
Stockton goalkeeper
Dino Gromitsaris (Bordentown/Bordentown) and his counterpart Derek Phells each made two saves in a scoreless first half that saw the teams combine for 19 fouls.
John Maxted (Middletown/Middletown South) and
Kyle Leach (Pitman/Pitman) registered Stockton's two shots on goal on headers.
The match was scoreless for over 69 minutes before Fortulus potted his team-leading fifth goal of the season with 20:39 remaining. The freshman beat the goalkeeper to the right side after receiving a long pass from
Larry Abanilla (Union/Union Catholic), who played for Kean in 2016 before transferring to Stockton.
The Osprey defense allowed just three shots the rest of the way, and none of them went on goal as Stockton earned a hard-fought 1-0 triumph. Gromitsaris finished with four saves to collect his first career shutout.
Stockton returns home to host Moravian in a non-conference game at G. Larry James Stadium on Wednesday at 7 pm.
