Reading, PA – Stockton University (5-2) and Alvernia University (3-4) played a tightly contested match with the Ospreys being edged 1-0 on Tuesday night. The contest was a rematch from last year when the Ospreys were downed by the Golden Wolves 2-0 in the ECAC Tournament semifinals at Alvernia. Â
Â
Both teams played a tough defensive first half as the Golden Wolves registered the only two shots on net but Ospreys netminder
Emily Gilligan (West Deptford/West Deptford) stopped both attempts. Stockton had an opportunity just four minutes in but came away empty.
Â
Kassidy Wentzell (Hammonton/St. Joseph's) fired a blast that hit the back of the cage, off a corner by
Casey Cordonna (Barrington/Haddon Heights), but the goal was nullified due to a violation against the Ospreys. Alvernia had the advantage 5-2 on penalty corners but could not break through and the half ended 0-0 after 35 minutes.
Â
Alvernia snapped the scoreless affair early in period number two. After a green card on Stockton at 39:29, Morgan Mondschein took a pass from Andrea Zimmerman and put the ball past Gilligan, just 20 seconds later for a 1-0 lead.
Â
The home team kept up the pressure with a large advantage in penalty corners and shots on goal until the Ospreys turned the momentum. Stockton applied pressure during the final 10 minutes of play to try and get the equalizer. Stockton closed the gap in corners and shots, including one last penalty corner at the 70-minute mark, but the attempt was stopped by the Golden Wolves and the match ended in the 1-0 final.
Â
Britney Stein (Ocean City/Ocean City) led the Ospreys with three of the four shots on goal on the evening. Gilligan kicked out three shots in taking the loss in net.
Â
Mondschein scored the only tally of the game, with goalkeeper Nicole Heinze making four saves in posting the shutout victory for Alvernia.
Â
Stockton will return home for their next contest as they will face Marywood at home on Saturday afternoon. Game time is 1 pm.
