Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (2-0) scored the tying goal in the last minute of regulation, then won the match in overtime, for a 2-1 victory over Albright (1-1) on Sunday afternoon.
Kassidy Wentzell (Hammonton/St. Joseph's) scored her first career goal to give Stockton their second straight win to open the season.
Â
The contest was scoreless through the first 20 minutes of the first half until the Lions broke the tight defensive affair. Bailey Lehman scored on a penalty stroke to give the visitors a 1-0 lead that would last the rest of the half. Albright forced much of the action as they outshot Stockton 9-5 with six attempts being on net in the first half.
Â
The contest remained a defensive struggle the rest of the game as neither team could break the other squad's backlines. Stockton had a chance to knot the score in the 63rd minute but a penalty stroke sailed high. The Ospreys kept up the pressure until the final minute when they finally were able to tie the match.
Â
Victoria Caiazzo (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) passed a corner attempt to
Harlee York (Riverdale/Pompton Lakes). York returned the ball to Caiazzo who backhanded the equalizer home with 54 seconds left in regulation. The assist was the first career point for York.
Â
Stockton wasted little time in ending the match as they broke free toward the Lions' goal early in OT. A blast by
Britney Stein (Ocean City/Ocean City) was blocked in front by an Albright defender. Wentzell collected the loose ball and fired home her first career goal for the game-winner just 1:50 into the overtime period.
Â
Emily Gilligan (West Deptford/West Deptford) kicked out seven shots in earning her second victory of the season in net for the Ospreys. Aileen Taylor made six saves for Albright in taking the loss.
Â
The Ospreys will face Elizabethtown on Wednesday night in the second of four consecutive home matches. Game time is set for 7 pm.
