Stockton Holds Off Rowan for 3-1 Win

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (5-4-1, 2-1 NJAC) received goals from three different players and earned a hard-fought 3-1 victory over its South Jersey rival Rowan University (6-4, 1-2 NJAC). Larry Abanilla (Union/Union Catholic) and Max Bond (Cherry Hill/CH West) each scored their first career goal for the Ospreys.

The teams played through a scoreless first half and the first ten minutes of the second half before Abanilla took a short feed from Ervin Gjeli (Hasbrouck Hts./Hasbrouck Hts.) and booted a sharp-angle shot into the top corner for his first college goal.

The Ospreys doubled the lead to 2-0 just 6:25 later. Bond tracked down the ball near the end line and fed Christian Bik (Vineland/St. Augustine), who broke in on the left side and buried his fourth goal of the season to increase the margin to two.

A red card on Stockton with 24:50 remaining left the Ospreys playing a man down for the remainder of the game. Rowan went on the attack and sliced the lead in half with 10:18 to play. A long pass into the box glanced off a Stockton player's leg and went to Ryan Campbell, who scored his sixth goal of the season for the Profs.

With just over a minute remaining, Rowan tried a last-ditch effort for the tying goal by bringing goalkeeper Kyle Dennis all the way upfield into the box on a corner kick. The service deflected to the top of the box, where Bond tracked down the loose ball and dribbled some 80 yards before depositing it into the empty net for his first career goal, sealing the 3-1 victory with just 47 seconds to play.

Stockton goalkeeper Michael Lescano (Union/St Benedict's Prep) made his first start of the season and earned the win with four saves. Dennis finished with one stop for the Profs, who held a slim 16-13 edge in shots.

Stockton will be on the road on Saturday for an NJAC game at Ramapo that kicks off at 1 pm.
