Galloway, NJ – After opening the season with three straight wins, Stockton University (3-1) suffered its first setback as the Ospreys fell to SUNY New Paltz (3-0) by a slim 2-1 margin.
Britney Stein (Ocean City/Ocean City) scored a goal for the second straight game.
All three goals in the match were scored on penalty corners, with the Ospreys striking first at the 9:04 mark. After the insert,
Victoria Caiazzo (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) shoveled the ball toward the right post, where Stein banged it home for her second goal of the season and a 1-0 Stockton lead.
The advantage lasted until just 3:26 remained in the first half. New Paltz's Samantha Ackerman inserted a corner to Jessica Ascencao, whose blast from the top of the arc tied the game at 1-1. Stein nearly put the Ospreys back on top with two minutes left in the half but her shot was denied on a defensive save.
The Hawks went ahead on their fifth penalty corner of the second half. The initial shot was knocked away on a defensive save by
Issy Gilhooley (Ocean City/Ocean City) but Carly Croteau potted the rebound for a 2-1 count with just over 15 minutes to play.
Stockton struggled to generate an attack until the final minute. A ball sent into the arc led to a collision between Caiazzo and New Paltz goalie Ryan Dowling that resulted in a penalty stroke, but the attempt sailed wide. A turnover when play resumed led to a shot by
Sarah Fisher (Monroeville/Woodstown) in the closing seconds that Dowling saved to seal the outcome with the Ospreys falling 2-1.
Stockton goalkeeper
Emily Gilligan (West Deptford/West Deptford) made four saves while Dowling finished with seven stops for New Paltz. The Hawks outshot the Ospreys 16-11 in the contest.
Stockton will conclude a four-game homestand on Wednesday when the Ospreys host Swarthmore at 7 pm.
