Montclair, NJ – Stockton University (7-9, 5-4 NJAC) topped Montclair State (11-5, 6-3) 66-63 on a buzzer-beater from three-point range by
Jordan Taylor (East Orange/Cicely Tyson) that went through the net just as time expired. The Ospreys snapped a six-game losing skid with the victory.
Steve Ferebee (Galloway/Absegami) led Stockton with a career-high 21 points plus a game-high nine rebounds. Taylor hit four three-pointers and totaled 18 points while freshman
Kadian Dawkins (Eastampton/Rancocas Valley) chipped in with a career-high 11 points. Ferebee and Dawkins were a combined 8-9 at the free throw line.
The Ospreys got off to a fast start as Taylor scored 11 points to spark his squad to a 15-2 lead. Montclair State closed within four twice before Stockton closed the half with a 13-2 run for a 43-28 advantage at the break. Ferebee scored 11 straight points during the late charge, with Taylor adding the other two.
A layup by Taylor four minutes into the second half gave the Ospreys their biggest lead of the game at 50-32. The margin was 18 again at 55-37 after a bucket by
Keenan Williams Jr. (Paulsboro/Paulsboro) with 13:20 remaining. Although the Red Hawks chipped away, Stockton's lead still was eight, 63-55, after two Dawkins free throws with 3:27 on the clock.
Montclair State then scored the next eight points, tying the game 63-63 on a three-pointer by Akbar Hoffman with 23 ticks to go. With the shot clock off, Stockton played for the last shot.
Brandon Hamilton (Camden/Paulsboro) penetrated in the closing seconds and kicked the ball out to Taylor, who buried the game-winner from the right wing as time expired for the 66-63 triumph.
Hoffman finished with a team-high 18 points for Montclair State followed by Eddie Emedoh with 13 points and Irving Callender IV with 11 markers and a team-high eight rebounds.
Stockton will play its second straight road game on Wednesday when the Ospreys visit The College of New Jersey for an NJAC contest at 8 pm.
