Stockton Knocks Off #18 Montclair State 1-0

Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (11-2, 1-2 NJAC) gave its NJAC playoff hopes a big boost with a 1-0 victory over #18 Montclair State (8-5, 0-2). The Ospreys scored the lone goal of the game on a penalty corner in the second quarter.

The victory was Stockton's first over the Red Hawks since 2005 and second in 18 meetings in the program's history. Casey Cordonna (Barrington/Haddon Hts.) scored the game-winner for the Ospreys. The marker was her fourth of the season.

Cordonna began the scoring play, inserting the ball to Issy Gilhooley (Ocean City/Ocean City) at the top of the arc and then running to the left post. Gilhooley fired a blast toward Cordonna, who deflected it home for a 1-0 lead 2:24 into the second period.

Stockton seized the momentum at the start of the third stanza with five shots and four corners in a 10-minute span, but they were unable to add to their lead. The Red Hawks then swung the tide with four shots and four corners in the last five minutes of the quarter, but the Osprey defense fended off each try.

Montclair State had the potential game-tying goal disallowed on a high shot with just under nine minutes remaining. Stockton staved off four more corners and goaltender Emily Gilligan (West Deptford/West Deptford) made a save on a backhand shot with 12 seconds left to seal the 1-0 victory.

Gilligan became Stockton's all-time leader with her 11th career shutout and tied the school record of five shutouts in a season. She was supported by strong defensive play from Osprey backs Cordonna, Lauryn Flynn (Warren Grove/Southern Regional), Hannah Wescoat (Upper Deerfield/Cumberland) and Isabella Ceraso (Marlton/Cherokee).

Gilligan made five saves in the contest. The Red Hawks outshot Stockton 11-8 and Montclair State goalie Nicole Andriani finished with six saves.

After playing three straight ranked opponents, Stockton will have nearly a week off before visiting William Paterson for an NJAC game on Friday, October 18 at 6 p.m.
