Stockton Nipped 2-1 by Montclair State

Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (12-2-1, 4-1-1) fell behind by two goals in the first half and came up short in its comeback try as the Ospreys were edged 2-1 by Montclair State (10-4-2, 5-0-1). The defeat dropped Stockton into third place in the NJAC, one game behind the Red Hawks.

Salena LeDonne (Parsippany/Parsippany) converted a penalty kick in the second half for her eighth goal of the season, which is tied for the team lead with Sydney Williams (Millville/Millville). LeDonne is 2-2 on penalty kicks this season.

Stockton nearly jumped to an early lead 5:54 into the match on a shot by Brenna Clowney (Mullica Hill/Clearview) from just inside the top right corner of the box, but Montclair State goalkeeper Phoebe Bledsoe made a diving save.

The Red Hawks later got on the board with the first of two goals by freshman Tori Rolls at 17:33. Rolls scored her second of the day with 13:15 left in the first half for a 2-0 count. MSU doubled Stockton 8-4 in shots during the half.

Stockton pulled within one 16:48 into the second half. Dasey DiElmo (Little Egg Harbor/Pinelands) made a great dribbling run down the right side from midfield into the box, where she was fouled. LeDonne stepped to the penalty spot and deposited a low shot inside the right post to trim the deficit to one.

The Ospreys pushed forward throughout the last 20 minutes in an effort to tie the game, but they could not get a shot past Bledsoe. The goalie made a diving save on a shot from the top of box by Williams with 14:29 remaining.

Michelle Sander (Ewing/Notre Dame) was denied on a 25-yard free kick in the 82nd minute and LeDonne registered a shot on goal that was saved by Bledsoe in the 86th minute. Overall, Stockton outshot the Red Hawks 8-3 in the second half, but the two-goal deficit proved too much to overcome.

The 2-1 setback ended Stockton's four-game winning streak and 11-game unbeaten streak (10-0-1). Jennifer Devault (Mullica Hill/Kingsway) made four saves for the Ospreys and Bledsoe finished with four stops for Montclair State.

The Ospreys will face their stiffest test to date on Wednesday when they visit #5 The College of New Jersey for an NJAC match that kicks off at 6:30 p.m.
