Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (9-4-3, 2-3-2) played to a frustrating 0-0 tie with The College of New Jersey (10-2-4, 2-1-4) on a chilly night at G. Larry James Stadium. The Ospreys generated several scoring chances, but they were unable to convert.
Stockton outshot the Lions 15-7 in the game and goalkeeper
Dino Gromitsaris (Bordentown/Bordentown) made one save to record his fifth shutout of the season for the Ospreys.
John Maxted (Middletown/Middletown North) led the team with three shots.
Stockton nearly took an early lead in the 12th minute.
Dante Montesinos (West Long Branch/Shore Regional) went in on a breakaway and was fouled by TCNJ goalie Dan Mecadon in the box.
Christian Bik (Vineland/St. Augustine Prep) stepped in for the penalty kick, but Mecadon dove to his left and made a save on the attempt.
Mecadon later made a key stop on Maxted late in the half and the teams went to the break scoreless. The Ospreys kept up the pressure in the second half. Maxted barely missed wide on a shot to the far post in the 56th minute and Mecadon punched a volley shot by
Michael Echeverria (Linden/St. Joseph) over the crossbar in the 60th minute.
Eduardo Puerta (Margate/Atlantic City) nearly got Stockton on the board with a header in the 79th minute but the try sailed just wide. Maxted also had a near-miss in the 85th minute and the game went to overtime.
TCNJ nearly won it on a corner kick in the first OT. The cross sailed into the box for a header by Ryan Vazquez that was cleared off the line by
Larry Abanilla (Union/Union Catholic). Overall, the teams combined for just four shots, two apiece, in the two overtimes and the matched ended in a scoreless draw.
Mecadon finished with five saves for TCNJ, two in the first half and three in the second, to earn a shutout.
Stockton will play its final home game of the regular season on Saturday when the Ospreys host New Jersey City at 1 p.m.
