After 10 Straight Wins, Stockton Absorbs First Defeat

Galloway, N.J. – After beginning the 2019 season with 10 straight wins, Stockton University (10-1, 0-1 NJAC) suffered its first setback, a 3-0 defeat to #18 Kean University (12-1, 1-0). The game was the first NJAC contest of the year for both teams.

The Ospreys are in the Also Receiving Votes category of the NFHCA national poll, two spots out of the top 20, while Kean is ranked 18th in the nation. The Cougars are one of four NJAC teams who are nationally ranked.

Stockton goaltender Emily Gilligan (West Deptford/West Deptford) made nine saves, one off her season high, as Kean outshot the Ospreys 17-9. Issy Gilhooley (Ocean City/Ocean City) played a strong game for Stockton. Gilhooley registered a team-high six shots, including three on goal, and made a fabulous defensive save.

Kean kept Stockton on the defensive throughout the first half with advantages of 11-1 in shots and 9-2 in penalty corners. The Cougars got on the board on goals by Rachel Mills and Erin Donnelly in the second quarter for a 2-0 count.

Kean's Melissa Way made it 3-0 early in the third quarter. Two minutes later, Gilhooley swatted a Kean deflection out of midair with a nifty backhand just before the ball crossed the goal line for an excellent defensive save.

Stockton generated some offensive pressure with six shots and four corners in the last seven minutes of the third period, but the Ospreys could not break through for a goal. The fourth quarter was uneventful and Stockton's 10-game winning streak came to an end with the 3-0 setback.

Kean goalie Belly Reynoso blanked the Ospreys with four saves for the shutout.

Stockton will face its second of three straight ranked NJAC opponents on Wednesday when the Ospreys visit #4 Rowan University for a conference game at 7 p.m.
