Stockton Advances to NJAC Semifinals on Penalty Kicks

Camden, N.J. – Sixth-seeded Stockton University (10-5-4) advanced to the semifinals of the NJAC Tournament 5-4 on penalty kicks after a 0-0 tie with third-seeded Rutgers-Camden (13-5-3). The Ospreys moved on to face No. 2 seed Montclair State in a road game on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Stockton converted all five of its penalty kicks in the shootout and goalkeeper Dino Gromitsaris (Bordentown/Bordentown) made one save. Gromitsaris also recorded six stops during the 110 scoreless minutes for his sixth shutout of the season.

Rutgers-Camden opened the penalty kick competition with a successful attempt and Larry Abanilla (Union/Union Catholic) answered for Stockton. In the second round, Gromitsaris dove to his right and made the save that proved to be the difference. Dante Montesinos (West Long Branch/Shore Regional) then converted his kick to put the Ospreys in front 2-1.

The teams each were successful in the next two rounds, with Kyle Leach (Pitman/Pitman) and Michael Echeverria (Linden/St. Joseph) hitting the net for Stockton. After the Scarlet Raptors opened the fifth round with a goal, James McCombs (Brick/Brick Memorial) stepped to the penalty spot and booted a high shot into the net to advance Stockton to the NJAC semifinals, 5-4 in the shootout.

Rutgers-Camden doubled the Ospreys 20-10 in shots and 6-3 in shots on goal while Stockton held a slim 5-4 edge in corner kicks during the 110 minutes of game action. Seven of the 10 shots by the Ospreys came in the first half.

Abanilla topped Stockton with five shots. Gromitsaris three of his six saves in the two overtimes while Stockton did not register a shot in either extra period. Kieran Burns finished with three saves to post a shutout for Rutgers-Camden, which edged Stockton 1-0 in double overtime on Wednesday.
