Stockton Advances in NJAC Playoffs on Penalty Kicks

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (14-3-3) advanced to the second round of the NJAC Tournament, downing Rutgers-Camden (5-12-1) winning 5-4 on penalty kicks. Juliann Gee (Cinnaminson/Holy Cross) tallied the final goal in the shootout, after the teams had played to a scoreless tie after 110 minutes.

The teams played a tough defensive game from the start, as evidenced by the shots and shots on net. Stockton held a 7-5 advantage on shots, with four on goal. The Scarlet Raptors got their first and only shot on net, during the first 45 minutes of play.

The ospreys stepped up the pressure in the second stanza to no avail. The home squad peppered the visitors with eight more attempts, five on goal, but could not get anything through, sending the contest to overtime.

Through the two extra frames, Stockton held an 8-2 shot margin with five on goal. The closest the Ospreys came to ending the match was in the second overtime, when Michelle Sander (Ewing/Notre Dame) and Kiersten Reszkowski (Freehold/Freehold Twp.) fired a pair of attempts that were kicked away.

In the shootout, with the score tied at 1-1, Salena LeDonne (Parsippany/Parsippany) hit the post, giving the Raptors a chance to win the game. But Stockton goalkeeper Jennifer Devault (Mullica Hill/Kingsway) stopped the fourth attempt, giving the Ospreys life.

With the score at 4-4, Gee stepped up and hit the net for the 5-4 advantage. Devault then sealed the contest with another save on the Raptors final attempt, sending the Ospreys to the second round of the Tournament.

Stockton posted 14 shots on goal for the contest, with Sander and LeDonne leading Stockton with five and four shots on goal respectively. Devault made just one save in registering her third consecutive shutout and sixth of the season. She now has a scoreless streak of 368 minutes going into the next round.

Natalie Eberhardt was outstanding in net, making 14 saves for Rutgers-Camden.

Stockton will travel to Montclair State for their next round matchup. The match is scheduled for Tuesday night at 7pm.
