Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (4-5, 1-4 NJAC) fought back from a second-half deficit but fell in overtime 60-57 to William Paterson (5-5, 4-1 NJAC) on Saturday afternoon.
Kiley Gelston (Washington Twp./Washington Twp.) topped the Ospreys with 11 points on the day.
The Ospreys started off strong, taking a 12-8 lead after one quarter.
Hailee Porricelli (Howell/Freehold Twp.) led the way with five markers, including a three-pointer that knotted the game for the first of nine times during the contest.
Stockton extended the margin in the second frame as six different Ospreys scored, led by
Lajerah Wright (Atlantic City/Atlantic City) with five points. The home team took a 26-20 lead into the break, with Wright scoring seven points and grabbing four rebounds during the first 20 minutes of play.
The Pioneers took control of the game in the third period, starting on a 10-3 run to take a 30-29 lead at the 7:10 mark. Stockton fought back with four straight points for a brief 33-30 lead before the visitors regained the momentum. William Paterson outscored the Ospreys 11-5 over the final 6:10 to end the period holding a 41-38 advantage.
The fourth quarter was tense as both teams battled for every point. The Pioneers held a four-point margin at 50-46 when the game got interesting. Gelston scored a basket at 1:06 to close to 50-48.
Emily Donzanti (Toms River/Toms River South) then tied the game at 50-50 with a pair of foul shots with 19 ticks on the clock left.
Yakira Rosa answered with the only three-point basket of the day for the Pioneers with 2.4 seconds remaining to give the Pioneers a 53-50 lead. After a Stockton timeout, Porricelli was fouled attempting a game-tying three with 0.4 seconds left. The sophomore made all three free throws to send the game into the extra period at 53-53.
Unfortunately for the Ospreys, William Paterson took control during the final five minutes, winning the period 7-4 and pulling out the 60-57 victory.
In addition to Gelston, freshman
Ionyonia Alves (Mays Landing/Oakcrest) tallied 10 points and tied Wright for team-high honors with eight rebounds. Wright chipped in with nine points, three blocks and three assists, with Donzanti and Porricelli adding eight points each. Donzanti and Gelston pilfered three steals apiece.
William Paterson was led by Rosa with a game-high 19 points. Allison McBride added 16 points and a game-high 10 boards.
Stockton will have a long layoff over the Christmas break until the Ospreys play again. Stockton will take on McDaniel College on January 2, 2020 at 1 pm in Galloway.
