Salem, Va. – Stockton University (8-3, 5-0 NJAC) suffered its second-worst shooting performance of the season and could not overcome the slump in an 86-54 defeat to host Roanoke (7-4) in the championship game of the Cregger Classic. The defeat snapped Stockton's six-game winning streak.
DJ Campbell (Vineland/Vineland) and
Kyion Flanders (Wildwood/Wildwood) were selected to the All-Tournament Team. Campbell registered his first career double-double with a team-high 13 points and career-best 10 rebounds while Flanders netted 12 points.
In his second game as an Osprey, freshman
Rynell Lawrence (Millville/Millville) went 2-2 from the floor and 3-5 at the line for seven points in 17 minutes off the bench. Stockton was hampered by just 31.6 percent shooting from the floor, including 4-24 (16.7%) from three-point range. The team's 54 points equaled its lowest total of the season.
Campbell scored five early points to spark Stockton to a 9-4 lead in the opening 5:37. From there, the Ospreys struggled to put the ball in the basket, scoring only three points in the next seven minutes and falling behind 27-12. Campbell finished with seven first-half points but Stockton went 2-15 (13.3%) from beyond the arc and trailed 42-24 at the break.
Although the Ospreys improved to 42.3 percent (11-26) from the floor in the second half, they were unable to gain any ground on the Maroons. Flanders went a perfect 4-4 from the floor plus 3-5 at the line for all 12 of his points after the break, however Stockton saw its six-game winning streak halted with the 86-54 setback.
Stockton will be on the road again on Saturday for a non-conference tilt at Misericordia University that tips off at 3 p.m.
