Stockton Splits Two More Games in Florida

Clermont, FL – Stockton University (5-3) split two games for the third time in four days during their Florida trip today. The Ospreys were downed by Bowdoin (3-0) by a 5-4 final, and then exploded for an 11-0, five inning whitewash over Scranton (6-4) in the second game.

Senior Casey Schieda (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.), junior Ashley Lobell (Cedar Knolls/Whippany Park) and freshman Leah McCray (Philadelphia, PA/Merion Mercy Academy) all blasted homers in the second game. For Lobell and McCray it was their first career homers.

In the opening contest, Stockton jumped out on the Polar Bears for two runs in the second inning. Carli Shaw (Bordentown/Bordentown) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for an RBI, and then Meg Murzello (Maple Shade/Holy Cross) followed that up with a fielder's choice for the 2-0 lead. It was short lived as Caroline Ric smashed a two run homer to knot the game at 2-2 after three innings.

Schieda came through with an RBI double to get the Ospreys back in front 3-2. A couple of Osprey mistakes led to three unearned runs to give Bowdoin a 5-3 advantage after six innings. The Ospreys tried to rally in the last stanza as Murzello plated Lilly James (Roseland/West Essex) to slice the margin to one run, but the charge ended there and set the final score at 5-4.

The Ospreys ran away quickly in game two with three home runs to highlight the rout. Alexandra Cosenzo (East Hanover/Hanover Park) got Stockton on the board with a sacrifice fly in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. It was Cosenzo's 10th RBI of the week.

Stockton started to open up the contest in the second inning as a Morgan DiVello (Hammonton/Hammonton) double scored one run and then Murzello plated DiVello for the second run of the inning. Schieda put the exclamation mark on the frame with a two-run blast, her first of the season for a 5-0 lead after two innings.

Stockton added more fireworks in the third inning, highlighted by Lobell's homer, a two run bomb. Shaw followed that with an RBI triple before McCray ended the scoring with her home run and an 11-0 lead.

That gave Samantha Huetter (Roseland/West Essex) all the runs she needed, as the sophomore tossed her second shutout of the week. She tossed a complete game, allowing just four hits and striking out five Scranton batters.

Stockton will finish up their Florida excursion tomorrow with two more matchups. The Ospreys will face Amherst College at 9:15am, followed immediately at 11:15am against Franklin and Marshall.
