Swarthmore, PA – After starting the season with 10 straight wins, Stockton University (10-2) fell from the unbeaten ranks with a pair of defeats to Swarthmore College (11-3), which is ranked fifth in the American Baseball Coaches Association poll. The scores were 13-0 and 19-4.
The Ospreys were held to four hits in the opener, one apiece by
Austin Gonella (Beachwood/Toms River South),
Brandan Gomez (Jersey City/Ferris),
Garrhet Reedy (Tinton Falls/Momouth) and
Andrew Slinger (Tinton Falls/Monmouth).
Swarthmore scored a run in the bottom of the first and the 1-0 margin remained until the bottom of the fourth. The Garnet plated two runs in the fourth stanza and three in the fifth before tacking on seven runs in the sixth frame for the 13-0 final.
Stockton loaded the bases in the seventh inning on singles by Gomez and Slinger plus a walk to
Garrett DeMarrais (Oradell/River Dell), but the game ended on a groundout as the Ospreys suffered their first defeat.
JJ Swentkowski (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT) went 3-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI in the nightcap.
Joe Pipher (Brick/Brick Memorial) was 2-2 with an RBI. Swentkowski and Pipher combined for five of Stockton's eight hits in the game.
Stockton got on the board first, with an RBI single by
Brendan Doherty (Middletown/Middletown North) plating Swentkowski in the top of the first for a 1-0 edge. Swarthmore pulled ahead 2-1 in the second inning but the Ospreys tied it on an RBI single by Pipher that scored Swentkowski in the top of the third.
The Garnet exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the third and four more in the fourth for a 15-2 count. In the fifth stanza, Swentkowski stroked an RBI single and DeMarrais later scored an unearned run to end Stockton's scoring in the 19-4 setback.
The Ospreys will be on the road again tomorrow for a single game at Cairn University that begins at 1 pm.
