Wilkes-Barre, PA – Stockton University (12-8) continued a busy stretch of four doubleheaders in six days by splitting a pair at Wilkes University (15-8). The Ospreys dropped the opener 8-2 but won the nightcap 4-2 for their fourth straight split.
Morgan DiVello (Hammonton/Hammonton) paced Stockton with two hits in each game. DiVello went 2-3 with an RBI while four Ospreys added one hit apiece in the first contest.
Alexandra Cosenzo (East Hanover/Hanover Park) and
Angie Dunphy (Hainesport/Rancocas Valley) each singled and scored.
Wilkes plated five runs on four hits, a walk and an error in the first inning and Stockton never recovered. In the top of the second, DiVello singled home Stockton's first run and
Meg Murzello (Maple Shade/Holy Cross) earned an RBI when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to get the Ospreys within 5-2.
The Colonels plated three runs on three hits, a walk and two errors in the third frame for an 8-2 count and the Ospreys were unable to rally. Seven of the eight runs that Stockton allowed were unearned, a result of three errors in the first three innings.
Victoria Torp (West Milford/West Milford) recorded her first win of the season with the complete game in the 4-2 victory. Torp scattered eight hits and struck out one batter. DiVello continued her strong day at the plate by going 2-3 with a run and an RBI.
Ashley Lobell (Cedar Knolls/Whippany Park) went 2-4 with two runs and two stolen bases.
A solo homer by Wilkes in the first inning resulted in a 1-0 count that lasted until the top of the third. Lobell singled with one out and later scored on an RBI single by DiVello to tie the game 1-1. Wilkes pulled ahead 2-1 with a run on three hits in the fourth stanza.
Stockton took advantage of three errors by the home team in the sixth inning to score the tying and go-ahead runs.
Lilly James (Roseland/West Essex) led off with a single and later scored on a fielder's choice for a 2-2 deadlock. DiVello touched the plate with the eventual winning run on one of the errors to put the Ospreys on top 3-2.
Lobell singlehandedly manufactured an insurance run in the top of the seventh. The junior singled with one out and stole second. Lobell then stole third and scored on a throwing error on the play for a 4-2 advantage. Wilkes loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh before Torp induced a groundout to end the 4-2 triumph.
Stockton will play again on Tuesday when the Ospreys host The College of New Jersey in an NJAC twinbill that begins at 2:30 pm.
