Chestertown, MD – Stockton University (4-0) took to the road for the first time in 2019 and came away with a 16-11 victory over Washington College (2-2) in a matchup between two teams in the Also Receiving Votes section of the USILA national poll.
Goalkeeper
Justin Ruiz (Holmdel/Holmdel) lifted the Ospreys to victory with a career-high 21 saves while Stockton was outshot (46-40) and outdone in ground balls (44-37), faceoff wins (18-13) and turnovers (20-16).
Luc Swedlund (Randolph/Randolph) paced the offense with four goals.
Stockton grabbed the lead with a 4-2 first quarter on counters by
Dante Poli (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks South), Swedlund,
Erik Anderson (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.), and
J.J. McKenna (Barnegat/Barnegat). Washington sandwiched two goals around an
Eric Ellis (Voorhees/Eastern) tally to get within 5-4 late in the second quarter.
Eric D'Arminio (Roxbury/Roxbury) and Swedlund netted consecutive markers in the last 2:35 of the period for a 7-4 Ospreys' advantage at the break. The Shoremen scored two straight to open the second half and again close the gap to one at 7-6. Ellis and Swedlund answered to create some breathing room at 9-6 and spark a 6-2 run for Stockton.
The spurt included three straight goals by McKenna, Anderson and
Joey Tiernan (Voorhees/Eastern). Tiernan's goal was his second of the game and made it 13-8 with 13:37 left. The Ospreys stayed in front by at least three the rest of the way. Ruiz made seven saves in the fourth quarter to preserve the lead and clinch the 16-11 Stockton victory.
Anderson finished with six points on two goals and four assists while Ellis and D'Arminio each chipped in with two goals and two assists.
Matt Thermann (Spring Lake Heights/Manasquan) won 11 of 20 faceoffs and grabbed a team-high six ground balls followed by
Logan Holleritter (Oak Ridge/Jefferson Twp.) with five.
Zachary Gorrasi paced Washington with three goals and two assists. Trey Ritter and Kevin Trapp each registered two goals and an assist for the Shoremen.
Stockton will head back to Maryland on Wednesday for a game at McDaniel College starting at 5 pm.
