Glassboro, NJ – Stockton University (14-12, 3-5 NJAC) knocked off 12th-ranked Rowan University (19-7, 7-1) 4-1 in the first game of a conference doubleheader to deal the Profs their first NJAC defeat of the season. The Ospreys were denied a sweep as they were edged 6-4 in five innings (darkness) in game two.
Victoria Torp (West Milford/West Milford) scattered 10 hits and limited Rowan to just one run in the opener.
Angie Dunphy (Hainesport/Rancocas Valley) went 2-3 with a double and an RBI for two of Stockton's five hits.
Lilly James (Roseland/West Essex) was 1-3 with an RBI.
Rowan plated its run in the third inning for a 1-0 lead that lasted until Stockton scored four times in the sixth frame. An error by the Profs allowed
Casey Schieda (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) and
Morgan DiVello (Hammonton/Hammonton) to cross with the tying and go-ahead runs that put the Ospreys up 2-1.
James contributed an RBI single and Dunphy followed with an RBI double that capped the big inning and boosted the advantage to 4-1. Rowan later got the tying run to the plate with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Torp induced a flyout and then a groundout to seal her second win of the season, 4-1.
In the nightcap,
Alexandra Cosenzo (East Hanover/Hanover Park) went 2-2 with an RBI while James tallied one hit and one RBI. Stockton was hampered by four errors on defense plus a combined six walks from its three pitchers that saw action in the game.
Rowan jumped ahead 2-0 with a pair of unearned runs in the first inning but the Ospreys vaulted into a 3-2 lead with three unearned runs of their own in the top of the third. Cosenzo and
Ashley Lobell (Cedar Knolls/Whippany Park) stroked RBI singles before James walked with the bases loaded to score Schieda with the go-ahead run.
The lead was short-lived as the Profs came right back with three more unearned runs in the bottm of the third to go back on top 5-3. Stockton got one back in the fourth frame as
Liani Ortiz (Marlton/Cherokee) led off with a single and later scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of DiVello that earned the second baseman an RBI and made it 5-4.
After Rowan plated an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth for a 6-4 count, the Ospreys threatened in the fifth inning. Cosenzo led off with a walk and James singled with one out. The runners moved up on a groundout and were in scoring position with two down, but a groundout ended the rally try. The game was called due to darkness during the bottom of the fifth, resulting in a 6-4 setback for the Ospreys.
Stockton will be back on the road tomorrow for a non-conference doubleheader at Arcadia University that begins at 4 pm.
