Stockton Splits Non-League Twinbill at Arcadia

Glenside, PA – Stockton University (15-13) split a doubleheader for the second straight day as the Ospreys took the opener 4-2 over Arcadia University (18-8) in eight innings but were blanked 10-0 in the nightcap, which went five innings.

Liani Ortiz (Marlton/Cherokee), Meg Murzello (Maple Shade/Holy Cross) and Lilly James (Roseland/West Essex) each tallied two hits, an RBI and a run in the first game. Both of Ortiz's hits were doubles, and she also walked once.

Stockton trailed 1-0 until the top of the seventh when Murzello led off with a single and scored the tying run on an RBI single by Casey Schieda (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) that forced extra innings.

In the eighth frame, James earned an RBI with an infield hit and then scored on an RBI double by Ortiz. The sophomore then came across on an RBI single by Murzello to give the Ospreys a 4-1 lead.

After Arcadia scored one unearned run in the bottom of the eighth, Victoria Torp (West Milford/West Milford) induced the final out to post her second straight complete-game victory in the 4-2 triumph. Torp was masterful, allowing just one earned run (one unearned) on three hits in eight innings pitched.

Murzello, Ortiz, Schieda and Carli Shaw (Bordentown/Bordentown) each singled for Stockton's only four hits in the second game. The first eight Ospreys were retired in order before consecutive singles by Shaw and Murzello with two outs in the third inning.

Arcadia took an early 2-0 edge with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. The Knights broke the game open with six runs in the third inning and then tacked on two more in the fourth. Ortiz singled in the fifth stanza to extend her reached base streak to six games, but Stockton failed to score and the game ended on the eight-run rule at 10-0.

On Saturday, the Ospreys will play their third doubleheader in four days when they host William Paterson in an NJAC affair that begins at 1 pm.
