Game Recap: Softball |

Stockton Sweeps William Paterson; 7-4, 8-2

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (17-13, 5-5 NJAC) picked up two much needed wins, as the Ospreys swept William Paterson University (16-12, 3-7 NJAC) by scores of 7-4 and 8-2 on Sunday afternoon. Liani Ortiz (Marlton/Cherokee) led the offense with four hits, including her first career home run and Victoria Torp (West Milford/West Milford) pitched two complete games in the sweep.

The Pioneers took a 2-0 lead after four innings in game one, before Stockton got untracked. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Ospreys plated three runs, with the big hit coming from Casey Schieda (Monroe Twp./Monroe twp.) with a two-run single for a 3-2 lead.

The margin was short-lived as the visitors came back with a pair of runs in their half of the sixth frame, to re-take a 4-3 lead. Stockton put the game away with a four spot in the bottom half of the inning. Angie Dunphy (Hainesport/Rancocas Valley) and Lilly James (Roseland/ West Essex) led off with singles. An error loaded the bases for Megan Katzmar (Cinnaminson/Holy Cross) who knocked in two runs.

A fielder's choice by Morgan DiVello (Hammonton/Hammonton) and another RBI by Schieda gave Stockton a 7-4 lead. Torp then closed the door for the win in game one, scattering seven hits.

Game two was a repeat as the Pioneers again jumped out to a 2-0 lead with single tallies in the first and fourth innings. This time, the Ospreys sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring six times for a commanding 6-2 advantage.

Ashley Lobell (Cedar Knolls/Whippany Park) started the rally with a walk and Dunphy followed with a hit, and then an error loaded the bases. With two out, William Paterson looked like they would get out of the inning, but consecutive infield hits by Caitlin Hughes (Forked River/Lacey Twp.) and DiVello plated two runs.

Another error scored the third run of the inning, Alexandra Cosenzo (East Hanover/Hanover Park) knocked in two runs with a single, then Lobell accounted for the final marker with a hit for the four-run cushion.

Ortiz gave Torp another insurance run in the fifth with her first career homer and Dunphy finished off the scoring with an RBI in the sixth to set the final at 8-2. Torp again scattered seven hits but allowed just one earned run, to raise her record to 5-6 with the two complete game victories.

Schieda had three hits in game one and drove in two RBI as did Katzmar. Ortiz had two hits and scored twice. Lobell had three safeties in game two, Ortiz added two more hits and Cosenzo picked up two RBI.

Stockton will be back at it on Tuesday afternoon, when the Ospreys will travel to Camden to face Rutgers-Camden in an NJAC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3pm.
