Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (13-2) captured their sixth consecutive victory with a non-conference 18-14 win over Messiah College (8-6) on Tuesday night. Freshman
Dante Poli (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks South) led the Ospreys with a career-high seven goals on the night.
The Falcons opened the scoring with a marker 58 seconds into the contest for a 1-0 lead. Poli evened the score at 1-1 before the visitors scored the next two goals for a 3-1 lead at the 5:26 mark. Poli sliced the margin to 3-2, before
Luc Swedlund (Randolph/Randolph) knotted the game at 3-3 with 59 seconds remaining.
Messiah then took the quarter with a goal with two seconds left for the 4-3 margin after one period. That would be the last time the Falcons would have a lead, as the Ospreys started gaining momentum throughout the game.
Two goals by Poli and one by Swedlund gave Stockton the lead for good at 6-4 midway through the second frame. Messiah cut the lead to 6-5 but two more scores by Swedlund and
Eric D'Arminio (Roxbury/Roxbury) pushed the advantage up to 8-5. Messiah would hit the net on the next two goals, but Stockton held the lead at 8-7 at the break.
The squads traded goals in the third period for a 9-8 margin, before scores by Poli, Swedlund and
Jon Liguori (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) made it 12-8 for Stockton with 1:03 left in the period. Messiah closed it to 12-9 at the 25 second mark, sending the game into the final period.
After a Falcons goal to start the quarter cut the lead to 12-10, Stockton potted three straight markers by
Erik Anderson (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.), Poli and Swedlund for a 15-10 lead. The visitors scored four times, but Stockton answered with three tallies over the final 7:12 to set the final score at 18-14 in favor of the Ospreys.
In addition to Poli's career night, Swedlund tallied five goals to tie the single season record at 66 set by Kevin Logue (1997). D'Arminio and Anderson both scored twice with D'Arminio dishing two assists.
Matt Thermann (Spring Lake Hts./Manasquan) led the team with nine ground balls, while
Ryan Bradley (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) had three caused turnovers and five ground balls.
Justin Ruiz made 10 saves in earning the win in net.
Messiah was topped by Joseph Franken with six goals and three assists for nine points. Cory Hurst scored four times with Liam Lilienthal dishing a game-high four assists. Evan Stoker kicked out six shots in net for the Falcons.
Stockton will get back to CSAC play on Saturday, when the Ospreys will travel to Bryn Athyn, PA to face the Lions. Game time is set for 12 pm.
