Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (13-12, 3-8 NJAC) banged out 16 hits on the day but fell to a late rally to Rutgers-Camden (15-15, 6-5 NJAC) by a 9-6 score on Thursday afternoon.
Brendan Doherty (Middletown/Middletown North),
Jeff Schick (Marlton/Cherokee) and
Anthony Napoli (Erial/Timber Creek) all rapped three hits, with Doherty and Schick leading the way with two RBI each for Stockton.
The Scarlet Raptors opened the scoring, plating two runs in the top of the second inning, before the Ospreys answered with a three spot for a 3-2 lead after two frames. Schick, Napoli and Doherty all picked up RBI in the stanza.
Austin Gonella (Beachwood/Toms River South) drove in Doherty in the fourth for a 4-2 advantage. The visitors scored a run in the sixth inning to slice the margin to 4-3. Stockton answered again on an RBI by Doherty in the sixth and Schick's second RBI of the day in the seventh for a 6-3 advantage.
But in the top of the eighth inning, Rutgers Camden sent 11 batters to the plate, scoring six times on six hits and two Osprey errors to forge a 9-6 lead. The Ospreys did not have an answer in the final two innings and the final was set, with the Raptors gaining a three-run win.
JJ Swentkowski (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT) and
John Perrino (Wall/Wall) added two hits each to the 16-hit total with Perrino scoring a pair of runs.
Brett Yurgin and Matt Yanick had three hits apiece to pace the Scarlet Raptors, with Tyler Travis, Chris Jones and Billy Eisler driving in two runs each.
Stockton's game at Rutgers-Camden scheduled for tomorrow, is postponed until Tuesday. The Ospreys next contests will be a doubleheader at Rutgers-Newark on Saturday. First pitch is set for 11:30am.
