Newark, NJ – Stockton University (13-14, 3-10 NJAC) suffered a pair of setbacks in an NJAC doubleheader at Rutgers-Newark (12-15, 6-8) that began at 2 pm and finished under the lights. The Ospreys fell 10-5 and 7-2 in the twinbill.
Jeff Schick (Marlton/Cherokee) went 2-4 with two RBI in the first game.
Garrhet Reedy (Tinton Falls/Monmouth) contributed a double, two RBI and a run.
John Perrino (Wall/Wall) was 1-3 with two walks, an RBI and a run.
Stockton got on the board with an unearned run in the top of the first as Perrino earned an RBI on a groundout. Rutgers-Newark quickly went ahead 2-1 on a two-run homer in the bottom of the first. The Scarlet Raiders plated two runs in the fourth inning before a solo homer in the fifth made it 5-1.
The Ospreys rallied in the seventh behind a two-run double by Reedy and two-run single by Schick that tied the game 5-5. Rutgers-Newark sealed the outcome with five runs in the eighth frame, four of which came on a grand slam by John Klimowich. The big inning by the home team resulted in a 10-5 defeat for Stockton.
James Manos (Freehold/Freehold Boro) allowed three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts in 5.1 innings out of the bullpen. Manos was one of three Osprey pitchers in the game and was not involved in the decision.
Stockton was limited to three hits in the nightcap, with
JJ Swentkowski (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT) going 1-3 with two runs and a stolen base. Swentkowski extended his reached base streak to six, as did Perrino with a walk. Swentkowski also has a five-game hitting streak.
Rutgers-Newark broke out with four runs on five hits in the first inning and Stockton was unable to regroup. Swentkowski led off the fourth stanza with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Perrino to get the Ospreys on the board at 4-1.
With Stockton trailing 5-1 in the sixth, Swentkowski was hit by a pitch, stole second base, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch to make it 5-2. The Scarlet Raiders added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings for the 7-2 final.
Four Ospreys saw action on the mound including
Matt Zurawiecki (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) who tossed a scoreless eighth frame and fanned two batters in his one inning of work.
Stockton will play a makeup game against Rutgers-Camden on Tuesday at the Maplezone Sports Institute in Aston, PA (3:30 pm start).
