Aston, PA – Stockton University (13-15, 3-11 NJAC) was outdone 7-5 in an NJAC makeup game against Rutgers-Camden (16-18, 7-7) that was played at Maplezone Sports Institute. Stockton led briefly early in the game before being overtaken in the middle innings.
Brendan Doherty (Middletown/Middletown North) led the offense, going 4-5 with a triple, run and an RBI.
Garrhet Reedy (Tinton Falls/Monmouth) was 2-5 with a double. The Ospreys registered 12 hits and five walks but stranded 11 runners on base.
Rutgers-Camden jumped on top 3-0 with a three-run homer by R.J. Concepcion in the bottom of the first. Stockton quickly narrowed the gap with two runs in the top of the second on RBI singles by Doherty that scored
Anthony Napoli (Erial/Timber Creek) and
JJ Swentkowski (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT) that plated
Mike DeSenzo (Pompton Plains/Pequannock).
The Ospreys pulled ahead with two more runs in the third frame.
John Perrino (Wall/Wall) led off with a single and later scored the tying run on an RBI double by
Garrett DeMarrais (Oradell/River Dell). Napoli followed with an RBI single that brought in
Jeff Schick (Marlton/Cherokee) with the go-ahead score at 4-3.
The lead lasted until the bottom of the fourth when Rutgers-Camden went back ahead 5-4 with two runs on three hits, including a homer by Nolan Gerold. Solo homers by Chris Jones in the fifth inning and Billy Eisler in the sixth put Stockton down 7-4.
With two out in the top of the eighth, Doherty tripled and scored on an RBI single by
Austin Gonella (Beachwood/Toms River South) to make it a 7-5 game, but Stockton could get no closer and suffered the two-run defeat.
Reliever
Zach Fillmore (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) kept the Ospreys close with a solid outing out of the bullpen. Fillmore allowed just one run on five hits with three strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work but was not involved in the decision.
Stockton will be on the road again on Thursday when the Ospreys visit #4 Rowan University for an NJAC game that begins at 3:30 pm.
