Stockton Downed by Unbeaten Merchant Marine, 15-13

Kings Point, NY – Stockton University (9-5) had five players score two or more goals but came up on the short end of a 15-13 final to the United State Merchant Marine Academy (13-0) on Saturday afternoon. Michelle Pascrell (Howell/Freehold Twp.) and Nicole Jandras (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT) led the Ospreys with three goals each.

The Mariners, of the Skyline Conference, opened the scoring quickly in the first half, just 35 seconds into the affair, but Gaby Ojeda (Galloway/Absegami) answered 35 seconds later to knot the game 1-1 and start a four-goal spurt. Mary Carroll (Marlton/Cherokee), Pascrell and Jennifer Toal (Pine Beach/Toms River South) gave the Ospreys a 4-1 lead.

After two scores by the home team, Carroll planted her second of the day for a 5-3 margin. The Mariners then went on a 6-2 run to take a 9-7 lead at the break. Jandras and Pascrell, from Casey Shultz (Sewell/Washington Twp.), accounted for the two Stockton goals. Neither team would have more than a three-goal lead at any point of the tightly contested game.

The teams traded goals during the second half with each squad scoring six times. After the home team opened an 11-9 lead, Abbey Yannacone (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) and Jandras knotted the contest for the last time at 11-11 with 22:46 left in regulation. Carroll and Shultz assisted on the markers.

USMMA rattled off three straight goals and looked to put the game away at 14-11 at the 12:34 mark, but the Ospreys would not let down. Goals by Yannacone and Jandras, her third of the day, brought Stockton back to within one at 14-13 with 8:44 remaining. The Mariners tallied once more for the 15-13 lead but left the Ospreys 7:44 to try and win the game.

Ojeda had a shot stopped with 1:17 left, then Jessica Catalioto (Ringwood/Lakeland Regional) had a shot go wide in the final 15 seconds and the unbeaten Mariners held on for the victory.

In addition to Jandras and Pascrell, Yannacone, Carroll and Toal all had two goals. Shultz dished two assists and had four ground balls. Ojeda grabbed eight draw controls to top the Ospreys and goalkeeper Brooke Hallett (Absecon/Holy Spirit) made five saves.

For the Mariner, Jessie Wohner and Meredith Willard scored seven and six goals respectively. Hannah Gizzi made 12 saves in net and led all players with seven caused turnovers.

Stockton will get back to NJAC Play on Tuesday, when the Ospreys will face #17 The College of New Jersey. The game is set for Ewing, NJ and game time is 7pm.
