Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (13-18, 3-14 NJAC) dropped a doubleheader to William Paterson University (24-13, 9-8 NJAC) by scores of 5-2 and 16-5 on Saturday afternoon. Â
Jeff Schick (Marlton/Cherokee),
Garrett DeMarrais (Oradell/River Dell) and
John Perrino (Wall/Wall) all had two hits on the day, with Perrino driving in three runs.
Â
In the opening contest, the Pioneers scored a run in the fourth inning to break a pitching duel between
Ray Hughes (Forked River/Lacey Twp.) and the Pioneers Eric Rosenberg. The hurlers matched each other through seven frames, until the visitors finally opened the game against Hughes.
Â
A suicide squeeze, an error and an RBI single plated three runs to give William Paterson a 4-0 margin and chase the Ospreys ace. The senior tossed 7.1 innings allowing just two earned runs and struck out five in his final start. Senior
Eddy Rogan (Barnegat/Barnegat) got the Ospreys on the board with an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning to slice the lead to 4-1.
Â
The Pioneers added a run in the top of the final stanza, but Stockton tried to rally in their half of the ninth.
Austin Gonella (Beachwood/Toms River South) doubled and later scored on an error to cut the lead back to 5-3, but two strikeouts stifled the rally and set the final score.
Â
In the night cap, William Paterson opened a lead with a three-spot in the top of the second inning. Stockton put a run on the board in their half of the third frame, when
Anthony Napoli (Erial/Timber Creek) was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a DeMarrais double for the 3-1 lead.
Â
The Ospreys took their first lead of the day in the fifth inning. Hits by Napoli and DeMarrais and a
Brendan Doherty (Middletown/Middletown North) walk, filled the sacks for Perrino. He cleared the bases with a two-out double to give the Ospreys a 4-3 lead after five frames.
Â
Stockton tacked on another run in the sixth, when
Brandan Gomez (Jersey City/Ferris) came through with an RBI pinch hit for the 5-3 margin. But the visitors exploded for 15 runs over the final three innings to take the contest at 16-5. The Pioneers pounded 25 hits against eight Osprey pitchers in the game.
Â
Stockton will finish up the 2019 season tomorrow, when the Ospreys face #4 Rowan University at 3pm in Galloway. The game is a make-up date from Friday due to weather.
