Stockton Outlasts Moravian 21-20 in Overtime

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (7-2) saw a seven-goal lead evaporate in the second half but prevailed over Moravian College (6-4) 21-20 in overtime. Freshman Jennifer Toal (Pine Beach/Toms River South) scored the game-winner with five-tenths of a second left in the first OT.

Freshman Michelle Pascrell (Howell/Freehold Twp.) led the Ospreys with six goals plus three caused turnovers, two ground balls and a draw control. Fellow rookie Casey Shultz (Sewell/Washington Twp.) chipped in with five goals and three assists while Toal finished with four goals and three draw controls.

Shultz put Stockton on top 20-19 with 30 seconds to play but Moravian's Liz Bill capped a back-and-forth final 10 minutes of regulation by grabbing the ensuing draw control and scoring the tying goal with just nine seconds left to force overtime.

The Greyhounds snagged the draw control to begin OT but a shot by Meaghan McMullan hit the outside of the post and Stockton took possession. The Ospreys missed on two shots, one wide and one that was saved, however a Moravian turnover gave the ball back to Stockton. Toal earned a free position shot with eight seconds left and the try was stopped by Moravian goalkeeper Courtney Heist.

Toal then was fouled while trying to corral the rebound and awarded another free position shot with two seconds on the clock. The rookie converted on her second try, firing in the game-winner with just five-tenths of a second remaining to give Stockton the dramatic 21-20 victory.

Earlier, Stockton got off to a great start in the game with four goals in the first 4:06, two by Toal and one each from Pascrell and Gaby Ojeda (Galloway/Absegami) for a 4-0 lead. Moravian rallied within 5-4 before the Ospreys outscored the Greyhounds 7-2 the rest of the half for a 12-6 advantage at the break.

When Pascrell scored 1:19 into the second half, Stockton had its biggest lead of the game at 13-6. Moravian used a 9-2 run to tie the contest for the first time at 15-15. The Ospreys built an 18-16 edge before three straight goals by McMullan gave the visitors their first lead of the game at 19-18 with 7:30 to go.

Stockton answered with the tying goal by Pascrell at 4:08 and then the go-ahead goal by Shultz with 30 seconds left. Bill followed with the tying marker at the nine-second mark to force overtime, where the Ospreys eventually triumphed on Toal's game-winner for the 21-20 victory.

First-year goalkeeper Brooke Hallett (Absecon/Holy Spirit) earned the win with a career-high 10 saves. Ojeda and Abbey Yannacone (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) contributed two goals apiece.

Bill registered seven goals and 10 draw controls while McMullan also netted seven goals for the Greyhounds. Jillian Picciuto totaled four goals, two assists, six draw controls and three ground balls for Moravian.

Stockton will play its NJAC opener on Saturday when the Ospreys host Ramapo at 1 pm.
