Union, NJ – Stockton University (13-7, 3-3 NJAC) held a 3-2 edge after five-and-a-half innings before surrendering six runs and suffering an 8-3 defeat in a conference game at Kean University (17-9, 4-2).
Joe Pipher (Brick/Brick Memorial) went 1-3 with a double and an RBI.
Stockton managed just four hits but drew eight walks in the game. Freshman
Brendan Doherty (Middletown/Middletown North) extended his reached base streak to 17 with a single while
Austin Gonella (Beachwood/Toms River South) walked three times to up his reached base streak to 12 games.
John Perrino (Wall/Wall) led off the second inning with a walk, stole second, and scored on Pipher's RBI double for a 1-0 lead. Gonella also walked during the inning, and he scored on an RBI groundout by
Justin Schaff (Toms River/TR North) for a 2-0 advantage.
Kean got on the board with an unearned run in the bottom of the second to halve the Stockton lead to 2-1. The Cougars then tied the contest 2-2 on one hit and one walk in the third frame before Stockton pulled ahead 3-2 in the sixth inning.
JJ Swentkowski (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT) reached on a fielder's choice and later scored the go-ahead tally on an error.
Kean took its first lead of the game at 5-3 with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Cougars pulled away with one run in the seventh inning and two more in the eighth to deal Stockton the 8-3 setback.
In addition to Doherty, Perrino and Pipher,
Garrett DeMarrais (Oradell/River Dell) also stroked a hit for the Ospreys. Schaff added a pair of walks to his RBI in the game.
Stockton's next game will be at The College of New Jersey on Thursday at 3:30 pm.
